Labour and Co-operative MP for Redcar, Anna Turley, and other steel MPs have written to Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to question them on their support for British Steel.
The collaborative approach of Greg Clark under Theresa May’s premiership has been welcomed and the indemnity in place has allowed the process of finding a buyer to be carried out.
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Steel met on Monday to discuss the situation and MPs would like assurances from the two contenders for Prime Minister that support for British Steel will continue in order to secure a successful outcome.
Commenting on the letter, Anna said:
“We know too well in Redcar what happens when government support is withdrawn prematurely. A hard closure of the SSI works under David Cameron spelled the end of steelmaking before we even had a chance to consider a buyer.
“To their credit, May’s government have learned that lesson and Greg Clark has done a good job working with potential buyers for British Steel. We want to know that this work will continue under the new Prime Minister. A clear commitment to support would send the right message to potential buyers and to the workforce who are working hard to protect their industry.”
Copy of the letter:
As the four MPs most affected by the challenges currently facing British Steel we have been encouraged by the approach taken by the current Government. Through our membership of the British Steel Support Group, set up by the Secretary of State, we have been impressed by how much everyone is working together to secure a positive outcome.
As one of the two candidates to be the next Prime Minister we would be grateful if you would confirm that you will do all you can to complete the work of finding a new owner for the business that can deliver the sustainable future that is not only crucial to our communities but to UK plc.
We recognise this is a busy time for you, but this is such a crucial issue that we would believe your early commitment will make a very positive difference.
We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you about this if you would find it helpful.
