Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Chief Executive Amanda Skelton CBE is set to retire after 11 years in the role

Amanda has had an outstanding career in local government, which culminated in the award of her CBE in the New Year’s Honours List of 2018 for services to the Redcar and Tees Valley economy.
Her retirement will be considered by a special Borough Council meeting next Wednesday, where councillors will vote on whether to approve her departure.

Amanda’s clear vision, focusing on regeneration and service excellence, has led to notable improvements in Redcar and Cleveland.
These included transforming the Redcar seafront and bringing swimming pools back to the town, saving Guisborough Town Hall for the community and lighting up Saltburn Pier.
Events such as the Festival of Thrift have attracted thousands of visitors and a start or finish stage of next year’s Tour de Yorkshire has been secured.

In 2015, when SSI collapsed and the Redcar Steelworks closed for the final time, the Government asked Amanda to chair the SSI Task Force, which has since delivered 2,000 new jobs and provided training for thousands of former workers and their families.
More than 350 new businesses have been set up by former SSI workers, with support from the Task Force.
Amanda was also the lead on regional work to set up the Tees Valley Combined Authority. She negotiated the devolution deal which led to the £588 million Tees Valley Investment Plan. Work led by Amanda has generated £35m to be invested in Redcar and Cleveland in the future.

Under Amanda’s leadership, more than 1,000 people have been helped back in to work at the award-winning employment hubs at Grangetown and Skinningrove. The Council has also been recognised for its outstanding apprenticeship programme with a prestigious national MJ award for transforming lives.
Amanda said: “I will always be grateful for the opportunity to work in this wonderful area. I have loved the challenge but most of all, it has been an honour to work with such great people. I would like to thank the Redcar & Cleveland team and everyone who has supported me over the past 11 years.”
Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Leader Cllr Mary Lanigan said: “Amanda has been an outstanding Chief Executive and the legacy of her leadership can be seen across Redcar and Cleveland. On behalf of the Council, I would like to thank her for her service over the past 11 years and wish her all the very best for the future.”

Goooooooodddddd Ridddddddance! Scratched the backs of the steel workers cos they have a voice but ignored the welfare of the borough’s children, who of course have no voice and can’t be heard or seen patting her on the back! How many inadequate Children’s Services Ofsted reports, including the last awful SEND one, in her eleven years as CEO? ALL of them. If as they say, the measure of a society is how well it treats it children and vulnerable people, then she’s an out and out and OUT failure by any measure. the sooner she is gone along with her sidekick Director of Social Services (formerly Director of the failing Children’s Services), and Anna Turley, the better for our children and childrens’ children. I hope her obscenely big final salary pension chokes her and that no other self respecting company or corporation takes her on board as a new board member as per Coast and Country/Beyond Housing does for recently retired local council cabinet members
